This year the fifth edition of the EMSU (Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities) conference that will be hosted by the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) has the aim of keeping emissions as low as possible. Therefore a new concept has been created. We will use so-called Nodes.

Nodes are international groups of people that will be cooperating with and during the EMSU conference from their region. The Nodes process includes a survey on the role of universities in key global challenges that will be disseminated. After this survey, the Nodes will host a workshop using the results of the survey and finally they send in a contribution on the outcomes of that workshop that will on its turn be processed in the EMSU conference.

We now have three confirmed international Nodes and we are in discussion with five other international Nodes and one local Node. The confirmed international Nodes are from: , and . For more information you can also look at the EMSU website (www.emsu.org).

We look forward to a valuable cooperation with all Nodes and we expect to make a statement: emissions can be avoided, even during an international conference like EMSU!

The precise content of the meeting will be decided on after the results of the survey are appraised.

EMSU 2008 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Universities facing global changes for sustainability

RCE Barcelona together with the UPC and the UAB will coordinate the next international conference EMSU 2008 that will be held in Barcelona on the 15-17th of October 2008.

EMSU aims to promote the key role of universities in creating new knowledge and attitudes in order to face new environmental pressures. It also aims to explore mechanisms of interrelation between universities and other society entities to advance towards sustainability.

In the context of the vision for a new knowledge culture to build sustainable societies, this 5th edition will be focused on key global changes:

  • Climate change and resource scarcity (food, energy, water)
  • Production and consumption patterns
  • Governance and changing responsibilities
  • Poverty reduction and equality
  • Urban systems
Contributions are welcome! They need to target a key global change and explore the possibilities of promoting new attitudes in a university one or more of the following areas: Education; Applied & Interdisciplinary research; Organizational change & outreach; and Operations.
